FAQs

Can you tell me more about your background?

I am a philosopher by training, having earned my PhD in 2019. My interests were in logic and language, with a bit of metaphysics. After leaving academia, I found work in artificial intelligence and the tech industry. I now make content about philosophy and literature.

What about your family?

I do not answer questions about my family. They deserve their privacy.

Who are your favorite writers and philosophers?

To name a few: Ursula K. Le Guin, Aristotle, Alasdair MacIntyre, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Augustine of Hippo, Benedict of Nursia, Neal Stephenson, Guy Gavriel Kay, Gene Wolfe, David Hume, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Octavia Butler, and Frederick Douglass. The list is always expanding and contracting, but these writers tend to stay.

Why do you focus on trivial subjects like science fiction and fantasy?

The simplest answer is that I am a fan of the genres. I like to read them and talk about them. But I also believe that my interests in philosophy, science fiction, fantasy, and so on are all related. I am interested in exploring the world through a variety of lenses.

Will you review my book?

I do not do book reviews. If you’d like to send me your book, you’re free to contact me about that.

What are your thoughts on politics?

I try not to talk about politics in public — I think it is better for everyone to focus on solving problems around them by working with their local community and government. But broadly speaking, I want people to be able to live their lives without coercive interference. I often use the label' ‘anarchist’ to describe myself.

What are your thoughts on [insert controversial issue]?

I choose to speak on certain issues when I feel reasonably confident in my position and my reasons for them. I choose not to speak on other issues when I am less confident. My silence on an issue shouldn’t be interpreted as indifference, assent, or anything else — it might just mean that I need to think more.
